New Delhi: Supreme Court has extended the deadline for the final round of counselling till September 7 to get admission in the MBBS and BDS courses for 2017-18 in deemed universities based on the NEET score. The apex court, however, made it clear that the deadline which is now extended will apply only for deemed universities. It also clarified that no further extension will be given in the future for the final round of medical admission.

Admission for medical courses based on the All India Quota (AIQ) which was organized by Medical Couselling Committee (MCC) is now over and according to notification posted on the official website of MCC, seats remaining after the AIQ counselling are now reverted back to State.

Most of the states have started the process of mop-up round of the counselling for the medical and dental undergraduate degree admission, for example, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra released the allotment list for Mop Up round 2 for medical and dental admission on August 28.

The mop-up round is the last step of counselling for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) seats in the states. The candidates who register for it and are not allotted any college in the two previous rounds of counselling are considered in this round.

According to the schedule fixed earlier, the last date for mop-up round counselling was August 31.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud directed the competent authority (Director General of Health Services) to put up the list on the website and send it by e-mail to all the deemed universities, reported PTI.

5,500 seats vacant in Deemed Universities

The DGHS, which is the responsible for conducting the counselling in medical admissions informed the court that over 5,500 seats are still vacant in deemed universities. The apex court also directed the DGHS that 5,500 seats should be filled up from a pool of qualified 55,000 students to maintain the ratio of 1:10.

Meanwhile, in Kerala, scores of students have not been able to get an MBBS seat owing to exorbitant fees. The Supreme Court in a ruling on Monday had allowed self-financing medical colleges in Kerala to charge students Rs. 11 lakh as annual fee, including Rs. six lakh as bank guarantee.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan yesterday appealed to private self-financing medical colleges in the state to admit students by charging the pre-fixed fee of Rs. 5 lakh and forgo bank guarantee.

Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala is conducting spot admission to fill up the vacant MBBS and BDS seats today and tomorrow, that is on August 30 and August 31.

The spot admissions is conducted at Old Auditorium, Government Medical College Campus, Thiruvananthapuram.
