Ready To Include Urdu In NEET From New Session: Centre to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today considered the submission of the Centre government that it was willing to include Urdu as a language in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the common entrance test for admission into undergraduate medical courses across the country, from next academic session onwards. According to Press Trust of India, a bench, headed by Justices Dipak Misra, noted the submission made by Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, appearing for the Centre, that it was not opposed to conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Urdu medium also from 2018.
On April 13, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre to conduct NEET examination in Urdu from academic year 2018-2019 onwards but ruled out holding the entrance exam in the language this year. The bench of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar directed that NEET entrance exam be held in Urdu this year after CBSE told the court that it was extremely difficult to hold the exam in Urdu this year.
The supreme court's direction came on a petition by filed by the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO).
NEET 2017 was conducted on May 7 this year and the results were declared on June 23.
While noting the submission from centre, the court today said the appeal is disposed of.
"The exam for this academic session is already over. We can't put the clock back...The appeal is disposed of," the bench, also comprising Justice A M Khanwilkar, said.
On March 10, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it will consider including Urdu in the NEET exam. The bench of Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice R. Banumathi was then told the Centre cannot include Urdu in NEET for this year but was open to consider it for the academic year 2017-18.
The plea filed by SIO said that the exclusion of Urdu as one of the languages in NEET was "discriminatory, arbitrary and violates Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution".
The court had earlier sought the response of the Centre, the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council Of India, and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on the plea for making Urdu as a medium for the NEET 2017.
CBSE, the organizing authority of NEET, conducted the conducted medical entrance exam in ten languages this year- Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Oriya, Bengali, Assamese, Telegu, Tamil and Kannada.
