NIOS D.El.Ed: 15 Lakh Untrained Teachers Enroll For HRD Course, Maximum From Bihar

Nearly 15 lakh "untrained" teachers, inlcuding over 10 lakh from private schools, have enrolled for a training course by the HRD Ministry a last chance for them to obtain credentials for retaining their jobs.

New Delhi: After Union Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry gave a chance for those teachers who have not done the teachers training course but teaching the students of class 1 to class 8 two years' time to clear the course and become eligible, nearly 15 lakh of them have enrolled for a training course by the MHRD. This 15 lakh candidates include over 10 lakh applicants from private schools across India. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has designed a one-time Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) course for in-service untrained teachers training.

According to Press Trust of India, the highest number of applications of these 'Untrained Teachers' has been received from the state of Bihar followed by Uttar Prdaesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam.

1.95 lakh candidates registered from Bihar while 1.91 lakh registered from Madhya Pradesh and 1.69 lakh applicants are from West Bengal.

The number of teachers from Delhi who have registered for the course are 1018.

The Rajya Sabha on August 1 this year passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017 extending the deadline for teachers to acquire the prescribed minimum qualifications for appointment by four years.

The Bill amended the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. Under the new Act, the teachers who do not possess the minimum qualifications as on March 31, 2015 will acquire the minimum qualifications within a period of four years -- that is, by March 31, 2019.

"Quality education is the right of students and in order to ensure that we need to have quality teachers. NIOS has developed the course for upgrading the professional competence and information and communication based capacity building for teachers," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said at the launch of the course.

NIOS has received a total of 14.97 lakh applications, out of which, 12.29 lakh candidates have already made the payment for attending the exam. 

The payment window to complete the application process is open till October 5.

"Among the over 12 lakh untrained teachers who have enrolled for the course, 9.25 lakh are from private schools and 3.53 lakh are employed in government schools," NIOS Chairman CB Sharma said.

A mobile application has also been developed to help teachers seek any clarifications and solutions. 

The candidates will be provided a course which began today, will be spread over four semesters and will have total 1080 lectures which will be available in 10 languages.

Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) programme of NIOS is a specifically designed package for inservice untrained teachers working in primary/ upper primary schools of different parts of the country. 

The programme has been developed by the Academic Department, NIOS on the initiative of MHRD, Government of India, keeping in view the NCF 2005, RTE 2009 and NCFTE 2010.
