Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has issued orders for conducting public exams for students of class XI, and proposed to revise school education syllabus "on par with CBSE standards" in the coming years. School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan said in order to ensure that students did not feel the burden of appearing for three consecutive public exams between classes X and XII, changes had been made in the pattern of marks and the duration. Speaking to reporters here today, he said class XI students would also be brought under the ambit of public exams from 2017-'18 adding that orders had been issued in this regard.

Presently, students of classes X and XII appear for public exams.

Further, the 1,200 total marks for which students write the class XII exams will now be split.

Students will write for 600 marks in Class XI and another 600 the next year and will be provided with a consolidated marksheet after the class XII exams, he said.

The public exam duration has been brought down from three hours to two and a half, he added.

Students failing in one or more subjects in class XI will proceed to go to class XII and will be allowed to re-appear for those subjects in June/July or along with the class XII exams like the "arrears" system in colleges.

"Therefore, there will be no break for the students," the Minister said.

Further, the syllabus will also be revised for various classes starting from 2018-19 to 2020-21, he said.

"We want to make the syllabus on par with CBSE standards. It will also include Tamil culture, heritage, art and literature," he said.
