Punjab Technical Education and Industrial Training Department has started online classes to train students of the ITIs in the state. A committee of Principals and Instructors has already identified the e-learning content for 34 trades.
Dr. Anurag Verma, Principal Secretary of Technical Education and Industrial Training, said that on directions from Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi Technical Education Minister, the technical education department has taken this initiative so that studies of the ITI students is not hampered.
He said that the e-learning content was identified from various sites such as Bharat Skills, National Instructional Media Institute (NIMI), YouTube etc. The material has been arranged week-wise as per the syllabus prescribed by NCVT.
About the methodology of teaching, Mr. Verma said that the E-Learning Material would be sent to the trainees one day before till 4 p.m. via WhatsApp. Next day from 10.30 to 4 p.m. the Instructors would take an online class of 40 to 60 minutes' duration and give assignments to the trainees.
The Assignments are to be submitted back by 6 p.m. on WhatsApp. A test would be conducted on the weekend. Engineering drawing and workshop calculation and Science classes would be conducted every day at 3 p.m. for students of engineering trades.
The methodology of teaching was finalized after successful trial of online classes in five ITIs. In every district a nodal officer and a master trainer were deputed to train the instructors about usage of internet in teaching on April 10 and April 11, who further trained all the trainees of respective districts. Nodal officers and master trainers taught the methodology / usage of video conferencing for providing training to the trainees. Thereafter all the Instructors taught their students about 'studying through online sources' via video conferencing.
Mr. Anurag Verma himself attended online classes in four ITIs, i.e. Bhatinda, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Chudiyan and Patiala.
Though a few difficulties have cropped up in the implementation of the system, the general reception has been enthusiastic. A student Gurbeer Singh of Preet Nagar (Dugri) was found attending the class from the roof top of his home due to network problem but the process would be improved constantly by taking regular feedback from all stakeholders.
