According to the Tamil Nadu Education Minister K A Sengottiyan, the southern state has decided to introduce smart card system to school going students which will help to check the attendance of students.

Erode, Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu state government will now distribute smart cards to school students. According to the Tamil Nadu Education Minister K A Sengottiyan, the southern state has decided to introduce smart card system to school going students which will help to check the attendance of students. While attending a programme in Erode, the minister also said yesterday, with these smart cards, the parents could also verify if their children attending the school, reported Press Trust of India.

"A chip would be attached in the smart card which when examined show the attendance of students in the school. With this, the parents could verify if their children were attending the school," Education Minister K A Sengottiyan said attending a programme.

Before this, at least three institutes, according to a report by Indian Express, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Bombay Scottish School, and Jamnabai Narsee School introduced the smart cards. The report also said, with this, students would be able mark their attendance, gain access to restricted areas and pay for canteen meals using just one card.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Push for a digital economy, the CBSE had asked all its affiliated schools in last December to start collecting fee through online or a cashless mode from the next quarter commencing from January next year.

In a letter to the schools, CBSE secretary Joseph Emmanuel had said that the benefits of cashless transactions are enormous and the CBSE had brought e-payment facilities for collection of examination fee, affiliation and various activities including payments to its examination functionaries.

In another development July this year, the Government Higher Primary School at Hale Kesare village became the first state school in Mysuru district to use a mobile app for recording students' attendance.
