Teacher's Day 2017: Goa CM Manohar Parrikar wants look at the system of selecting best teachers (File)
Panaji:
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has suggested that the best teacher for the state level awards should be selected through a process involving past and present students. Mr Parrikar said the age-old practise of selecting the teachers for state level awards should be changed. "The current practise of selecting a best teacher is an age old concept. I thought that we can change the entire concept in which it is the student who will decide who is the best teacher," Parrikar said addressing state level function to mark Teachers' Day in Panaji.
The chief minister said the student will decide who is the best teacher.
"The teacher who is recommended by the students as the best will always be a positive teacher," he commented.
Parrikar said "from next year onwards, I feel that the names should be shortlisted and then they will be proposed or recommended by the students who have passed out."
"This entire process we can do online so that even if an ex-student is abroad he can recommend," he added.
Stating that the government has taken up the issue of improving quality of education on priority, Parrikar said the state government will stress on education and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
"Swachh Bharat can be successful with education because the one who is educated will not throw garbage on the road. The one who throws garbage on the road is literate but not educated," he said.
During the last 4-5 months we have been conducting exercise on improvement of education of which the outputs would be visible now, he said.
"We have decided to imbibe civic sense amongst the students including traffic discipline," Mr Parrikar said.
