The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar conferred the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2018 today. The event was held at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, as a part of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign launched by Prime Minister on September 15, 2018. Dr. Satya Pal Singh, Minister of State, HRD was also present on the occasion.
The Swachh Vidyalaya Puruskar was launched in 2016-17 to recognize and honour the schools which have done exemplary work in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene.
This year more than 6 lakh government, aided and private schools had registered for the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar.
Ms. Rina Ray, Secretary (School Education & Literacy) presented the welcome address at the event.
The awards were conferred upon 52 schools from across the country. Of the 52 awardee schools, 37 schools are from rural areas and 15 from urban areas. 45 are government/government aided schools and 7 are private schools. Further, 24 are elementary and 28 are secondary/higher secondary schools.
The schools that have been awarded also include 5 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and 2 Navodaya Vidyalayas.
As part of the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar, each of the school selected for the award will be given an additional school grant of Rs 50,000 along with a Certificate of Recognition.
Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh were also awarded Certificate of Recognition for having maximum schools that were awarded. 9 districts, i.e. Pondicherry, Srikakulam, Chandigarh, Hisar, Karaikal, Latur, Nellore, South Goa, Vadodara, were also awarded Certificate of Recognition for maximum number of awardee schools.
