India Surpasses China In US College Enrollments

India leads as the top source of international students in the US, making up 29% of the total, according to the Open Doors Report

This marks the first time since 2009 that India has surpassed China in international student enrollment

Over 330,000 Indian students enrolled in US higher education in 2023-24, a 23% rise from the previous year

This growth was primarily driven by increased graduate student enrollments, which rose by 19%, reaching 196,567 students

Indian students in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs rose by 41% to 97,556

China, which had long been the largest source of international students, fell to second place with a 4% decline in enrollment

 A total of 277,398 Chinese students pursued education in the US, maintaining their lead in undergraduate and non-degree programmes

Overall, the United States hosted a record 1.1 million international students during the 2023-2024 academic year, reflecting a 7% year-over-year increase

On the other hand, American students in India increased from 336 in 2021-22 to 1,355 in 2022-23, marking a 303.3% rise
