269 people to fight 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 269 aspirants will fight it out for the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala on voting day April 10, officials said.

Wednesday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations in Thiruvananthapuram. In all, 56 candidates withdrew their nominations.

In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) are the two major political combinations.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently begun contesting all 20 seats, it is yet to open its account even in the 140-member state assembly.

In the outgoing Lok Sabha, the UDF has 16 members and the LDF four.

For the 2014 polls, the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency has attracted the most number of candidates - 20 - while the least number of candidates, nine, have filed their papers from Mavelikera constituency.

According to the chief electoral officer's website, the state has 2,37,92,270 voters, which include 1,23,49,345 women and 1,14,42,925 men.

In the 2009 polls, the total size of the electorate was 2,18,59,536.

There would be 11,895 polling locations with 21,424 polling booths as against 20,476 polling booths in the previous election.
