New Delhi:
The Aam Aadmi Party headed by Arvind Kejriwal has asked Lt Governor Najeeb Jung not to dissolve the Delhi Assembly. In a letter to Mr Jung, AAP has said it wants a week to hold public meetings across Delhi to ascertain the people's opinion on whether it should form government again.
Mr Kejriwal had earlier today also called on Lt Governor Jung.
In February this year, Arvind Kejriwal had resigned along with his ministers, 49 days after he was sworn in as Delhi's chief minister to head a government supported by the Congress. Mr Jung had imposed President's Rule in Delhi, disregarding the recommendation of Mr Kejriwal's cabinet that the 70-member Delhi Assembly be dissolved.
The house is under suspended animation.
Hours after Mr Kejriwal's meeting with Mr Jung today, the Congress party ruled out extending support to the AAP if it tries to return to power in Delhi. The Congress' Arvinder Singh Lovely said the party would prefer fresh polls.
The BJP has also said that it would prefer fresh election.
In December, AAP made a spectacular debut in the Delhi state elections, winning 28 of 70 seats. The Congress offered the external support of its eight legislators after the largest party in the assembly, the BJP, said it could not muster the numbers.
Mr Kejriwal resigned on February 14, after his party's pet project- the Janlokpal Bill - could not be passed due to opposition from the Congress and the BJP.
Mr Kejriwal had then turned his attention to the general election, fielding over 430 candidates. He contested against Narendra Modi in Varanasi and lost. Mr Modi will be sworn in as the country's next prime minister on Monday.
With 28 seats, AAP is eight short of a majority in the Delhi Assembly. BJP along with its ally Akali Dal's one MLA had won 32 seats in the 70-member assembly. Number of BJP MLAs may come down to 28 as three party legislators Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Bidhuri and Pervesh Verma have been elected to Parliament. There is also one JD(U) legislator and one Independent.
