Lucknow: A day after a post-mortem of its humiliating defeat in the national election, Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party sacked 36 leaders who enjoyed minister-of-state rank. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, however, ducked questions about taking responsibility for the rout.

"Our party won more votes this time," Mr Yadav said, adding, "We failed to convey our good work to the people."

The Samajwadi Party won just five of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the state it has ruled since 2012. The BJP and its allies won 73 seats, leaving just two for the Congress.

Asked whether he would take a cue from Nitish Kumar, who resigned as Bihar chief minister taking responsibility for his party's defeat, the 40-year-old Chief Minister said, "You cannot compare UP's political situation to that of any other state."

The BJP, led by Narendra Modi, won a massive mandate to take power, after winning 282 seats on its own and 336 with its allies in the national election.

Mr Yadav, who had repeatedly questioned a "Modi wave", today said, "We will work according to the constitutional framework. And have a working relationship with Modi.

On Monday, Mr Yadav's father Mulayam Singh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, reportedly said at an introspection meeting that when he was chief minister, the party had won 36 seats in the state. Under Akhilesh, he commented, that had dropped to five.
