Arvind Kejriwal had complained to the Election Commission against proposed gas price hike from April
New Delhi:
Arvind Kejriwal's complaint on the near doubling of gas prices from April 1 has been taken up by the Election Commission.
"The commission will be looking at it and the urgency of going ahead with the decision," Election Commissioner HS Brahma told reporters today.
The Oil Ministry had last week sought the poll panel's approval to announce a hike in prices of gas from $4.2 a unit to $8 next month, when India goes to polls.
In his letter to the Election Commission, Mr Kejriwal had called the gas price hike a violation of the poll code of conduct, alleging that the decision was aimed at providing windfall gains to Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries and so counts among "corrupt practices during elections."
Oil Minister Veerappa Moily has said the new rates have taken into account the average price prevailing at international gas hubs and the cost of importing the fuel into India in past 12 months.
But the AAP leader has alleged that the government colluded with Reliance to push up prices of gas produced by the D-6 block off the Eastern Coast, operated by Mr Ambani's company.
Reliance, last month, had issued a statement describing Mr Kejriwal's charges as "completely without merit".
