Ashrit Pattanayak Named BJP Candidate For Pipili Bypoll

Ashrit Pattnayak, who also contested the polls from Pipili in the 2019 elections, will fight the bypolls as a BJP candidate this time, the party said in a statement.

The BJP on Thursday named Ashrit Pattnayak as its candidate for the by-elections in the Pipili assembly segment, the polling for which is scheduled on April 17.

Mr Pattnayak, who also contested the polls from Pipili in the 2019 elections, will fight the bypolls as a BJP candidate this time, the party said in a statement.

Mr Pattnayak had lost the previous election to BJD candidate Pradeep Maharathy by 15,787 votes.

While Mr Maharathy, a seven-time MLA, got 88,518 votes, Mr Pattnayak as the BJP candidate had secured 72,731 votes.

The BJP candidate's vote share was 41.62 per cent against the ruling BJD's 50.66 per cent.

The bypoll is being held in the Pipli assembly segment due to the demise of Mr Maharathy in October 2020.

He was elected to the assembly five times in a row from 2000 to 2019. He also won Pipili in 1985 and 1990.

The BJD is yet to announce the name of its candidate for the bypoll.

The BJD has been contemplating whether to field any family member of Maharathy or nominate a fresher, party sources said.

Mr Pattnayak said he was optimistic about victory as the people of Pipili-Delanga have changed their minds in favour of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He thanked the party's senior leaders for posing trustin him.

Meanwhile, state Congress president Niranjan Patnaik said three names have been sent to the party's central leadership for finalising the candidate.

Ajit Mangaraj, Purna Swain and Nishikant Mishra are the front runners for the Pipili segment, state Congress sources said.
