Battleground Haryana: Opinion polls predict major reverses for Congress

Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Hooda.

NDTV's Opinion Poll shows that the Congress will lose heavily in Haryana, a state that had voted overwhelmingly in favour of the party five years ago.

The BJP and its ally, the Haryana Janhit Congress of Kuldeep Bishnoi are expected to win six of the state's 10 seats. (Full coverage: India Votes 2014)

The Congress will win two seats, the poll shows. But chief minister Bhupinder Hooda is confident of the party repeating its 2009 performance where it won 9 parliamentary seats.  "Last time the BJP and INLD were together. This time they are contesting separately. Now another party has joined the BJP - the HJC. It is going to be a triangular contest and it will certainly benefit the Congress," Mr Hooda told NDTV. Om Prakash Chautala's Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is predicted to win 2 seats. The INLD has said it will support Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, should he fail to win a majority.
