Election Commission Bars Madan Mitra From Using Mobile Phone In Hospital

Mr Mitra is Trinamool candidate from Kamarhati constituency in the ongoing West Bengal assembly election.

Kolkata: The Election Commission on Friday barred Trinamool Congress candidate Madan Mitra, who has been in jail for his alleged involvement in the Saradha chit fund scam, from using any mobile phone and also restricted his meetings.

Mr Mitra is Trinamool candidate from Kamarhati constituency in the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections. He was on Tuesday admitted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata from the Alipore Jail after he complained of chest pain.

"In accordance with the Election Commission's order, the home secretary has issued an order to ensure none other than family members can visit Madan Mitra in hospital and also he can't use any mobile phone during his stay," a poll panel official said on Friday.

Mr Mitra has been behind bars since his arrest on December 12, 2014, except for a brief period in October 2015 when he was granted bail by a lower court. The relief was subsequently cancelled by the Calcutta High Court.

The Congress and the Communist Party of India-Marxist had on Thursday told the Election Commission that Mr Mitra was likely to influence voting from the hospital and so should be put under surveillance.
