Gandhinagar:
Narendra Modi is set to become India's next prime minister - early results show his BJP and its allies heading towards more than 300 seats in the Lok Sabha. A majority of 272 is needed to form the government.
His mother, Hiraben, was seen praying this afternoon. Mr Modi, 63, currently serving a fourth consecutive term as chief minister of Gujarat, is watching the election results on television at his home in Gandhinagar. Sources say he will leave soon to seek her blessings.
Mr Modi has spoken in his campaign of being the son of a lower-caste tea seller and has said his mother supported the family by working in neighbouring houses. She travelled by autorickshaw to vote in the national election in Gandhinagar.
Mr Modi has trounced the Congress, whose campaign was fronted by Rahul Gandhi.
Mr Modi is ahead in both of the constituencies he contested - in Vadodara in his home state of Gujarat and in the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
"This is undoubtedly going to be a BJP government," said Prannoy Roy, head of NDTV news and India's best-known psephologist.
