Elections Results 2014: Narendra Modi's Victory Road-Show in Delhi

New Delhi: Narendra Modi, who won a massive mandate yesterday to be India's next Prime Minister, arrived at the Delhi airport this morning to a sea of supporters dancing, cheering, beating drums and jostling to get a glimpse of him. (See Pictures here)

Dressed in blue and grey, Mr Modi stood partly out of a moving SUV, flashing the victory sign. Saffron and green party flags lined the roads down which he will drive in a road show to the BJP's headquarters at 11, Ashoka Road in the heart of the capital. (Track Live Updates Here )

The change in status from Chief Minister of Gujarat to PM-to-be was signaled by a security upgrade as Mr Modi reached the Ahmedabad airport in a big cavalcade of white cars this morning. In Delhi, much khaki dotted the crowds at the airport and security men conspicuously surrounded his car.  

Security has also been tightened at the BJP head office, where the elite National Security Guards or NSG scanned the area.

An ecstatic BJP has turned the wide roads of Delhi into a 20-km red carpet to welcome Mr Modi, who authored for it the most emphatic electoral victory by any political party since 1984. At the BJP office, Mr Modi will attend a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, a group of top 12 leaders. Some immediate decisions need to be taken, among them who will replace Mr Modi as Gujarat chief minister.  (At First Victory Rally, Narendra Modi Says Good Days are Upon Us)

The board is also expected to discuss the process of government formation and names for key portfolios in the Narendra Modi cabinet.

Mr Modi will then leave for Varanasi, the Uttar Pradesh constituency that handed him a resounding victory in his first Lok Sabha election. He will offer prayers at the banks of the Ganga river before flying back to Delhi late in the evening and then back to Ahmedabad.
