In Bangalore, where Anna rallies were hits, AAP hopes for support

Aam Aadmi Party is contesting all three parliamentary seats in Bangalore.

Bangalore: The Aam Aadmi party has announced 13 candidates for Karnataka - a state for which the party has big hopes. Bangalore is a city that saw a great response to the Anna Hazare rallies that could be considered the precursor to the party's launch on an anti-corruption platform.  So AAP is contesting all three parliamentary seats in Bangalore. But it is also a city where powerful candidates have been fielded by other parties.

For Bangalore South, the party has fielded Nina Nayak, former Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Ms Nayak told NDTV, "They have evinced confidence in me, and that is why I have agreed to stand. Let us hope we can overcome this corrupt, communal and dynasic politics.

My forte has been working with children - for the last 30 years at the governance and the ground level. So I am hoping we can raise the standard of intervention, governance for children."

Bangalore South has indeed drawn attention - but not because of AAP. There are two giants in the contest - veteran politician Ananth Kumar who has won the seat five times in a row...And Nandan Nilekani - co-founder of Infosys - a newcomer to politics but not to public life.

Mr Nilekani told NDTV, "I think the time has come for a change in Bangalore South."

The BJP holds all three Bangalore seats and present a united front - for this seat at least. Ananth Kumar refuses to even discuss his opponents. He started to walk away when NDTV asked him about Nandan Nilekani standing against him, then returned to say, "Congress is not in the field."

He was backed by his party colleague, PC Mohan the sitting MP and candidate from Bangalore Central. "Ananth Kumar has won five times consecutively. And he is definitely going to hit a sixer this time."

Another ex-Infosys man is contesting from Bangalore Central against Mr Mohan - but this time for the Aam Aadmi Party. V Balakrishnan was on the board of directors of that IT giant.

In Bangalore north, the Congress is still to hold its primaries to select a candidate. The BJP is fielding a big name, former chief minister, Sadananda Gowda. AAP's candidate is Professor Babu Mathew, former Registrar of the National Law School of India University.
