A reserved constituency in a Naxal-affected area, Jamui was won by JD(U)'s Bhudeo Choudhary in 2009. After Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan decided to field his son Chirag from this south Bihar seat after forging an alliance with the BJP, chief minister Nitish Kumar was compelled to change his party's candidate. He named the state assembly speaker, Uday Narain Choudhary, who hails from Imamganj in Gaya district, as the JD(U) candidate.
The seat has become prestigious, with the two parties lining up an array of high-profile leaders to woo the electorate.
