Nawada in south Bihar is dominated by Bhumihars and Yadavs. The BJP's Giriraj Singh is a Bhumihar. The JD(U) and RJD have fielded Yadavs . JDU's Kaushal Yadav, the three-term MLA from Gobindpur, is known for his muscle power. The RJD has fielded former Bihar minister Rajballabh Prasad.
On April 2, chief minister Nitish Kumar faced off with Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, in the constituency. The two leaders addressed rallies, and only a distance of 25 kms and an hour apart.
