Lalu Prasad's daughter preps to take on her 'uncles'

Lalu Prasad's daughter preps to take on her 'uncles'
Patliputra: For Lalu Prasad's daughter Misa Bharti, the battle for Bihar's Pataliputra constituency is one that pits her against two men she calls her uncles.

She is contesting from the seat her father lost to Janata Dal United leader Ranjan Yadav by over 30,000 votes in 2009. And she could possibly face Ram Kripal Yadav, Lalu's former lieutenant, who joined the BJP today.

Ram Kripal quit the Rashtriya Janata Dal after Lalu announced that his daughter would contest from Pataliputra, but he hasn't been named the BJP's candidate from here till now.

"Both are my uncles. I know both of them very well. I know their strength and weaknesses. The people are with me.  The fight is between me and Ram Kripal Yadav," said the 37-year-old first-timer.

Misa, who draws her name from the draconian Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) under which her father was jailed during the Emergency of 1975-77, says she is confident.

"Do I look scared?" she challenged, as NDTV followed her on the campaign trail.

At the Fulwari Sharif block, Lalu's first-born was surrounded by enthusiastic supporters of the RJD who slammed Ram Kripal Yadav for turning his back on the party over Pataliputra.

"Just because he did not get a seat doesn't mean he should change his ideology," said RJD worker Ezaz Ahmed.

At a village, Misa stopped to chat with a group of children who shared that they want to be IPS officers. "Study hard," the candidate offered, smiling.

A few kilometres away, the reception was not as warm as party workers worried about votes getting split.

Fulwari resident Sajjad Akhtar told NDTV, "Ram Kripal should have been allowed to contest from here. After all, loyalty should count for something."

What Misa can count on is a divide in the opposition camp. If Ram Kripal hopes to contest from here, he will face competition from Nawal Kishore Yadav, a BJP legislative council member who defected from the RJD some days ago. "I was promised the Pataliputra seat. Ram Kripal has no stature," said Mr Yadav.
