New Delhi: Narendra Modi will be in India's north-east today where he is expected to address two rallies in Manipur and Assam. This is the Gujarat Chief Minister's maiden election campaign in the region after his elevation as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate last year.

Mr Modi is likely to address the rally in Manipur's capital Imphal at around 11 am and in Guwahati in Assam at about 1 pm.

Besides other issues, the 63-year-old leader is expected to speak on the death of Nido Tania in Delhi for which he directly attacked Congress president Sonia Gandhi at a rally in Meerut last week.

"In Delhi, a student from Arunachal Pradesh was killed under the nose of Sonia Gandhi... It is shameful," the Gujarat Chief Minister had said, slamming the Centre as well as the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi over Nido's death.

The death of the 20-year-old from Arunachal Pradesh following an alleged hate attack triggered widespread political response with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal showing up at the protest organised by groups from the north-east at the capital's Jantar Mantar.

After the two rallies in the north-east, Mr Modi will head to Chennai in the south later in the day to attend an event.
