The BJP and its allies have won 336 seats in the 543 member Lok Sabha, the biggest mandate in 30 years. Senior BJP leaders and NDA allies like Ram Vilas Paswan and Uddhav Thackeray were at the presidential palace with Mr Singh.
The party chief said, "Narendra Modi had said in Hyderabad - Yes we can... As party president, I can say - Yes, he will. We have seen him perform in Gujarat...Our victory is also due to the proven track record of our state governments."
Mr Singh said 3,000 people are expected to be invited for Mr Modi's oath taking. Sources have indicated that Mr Modi would like his full cabinet sworn in with him. He has held multiple meetings in Delhi over the last few days to finalise that list.
This morning, BJP members filled Parliament's iconic Central Hall in numbers never seen before - with 282 Lok Sabha members, this is the party's best performance ever.
As he stepped into Parliament House, first-time MP Narendra Modi bowed down and touched the ground with his forehead. He got a rousing welcome from those gathered and an embrace from veteran leader LK Advani, who had publicly opposed the party's move to name him prime ministerial candidate before the assembly elections last year. Mr Modi touched his feet. (See pics here)
Mr Advani proposed Mr Modi's name for Prime Minister and it was seconded by senior leaders like MM Joshi, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari and Venkaiah Naidu, who called Mr Modi the "darling of the masses." (Narendra Modi for PM: Advani Proposes, BJP Makes It Official)
All party MPs then endorsed Mr Modi for PM, as did the NDA allies.
In an emotional speech Mr Modi thanked his party profusely and exhorted his partymen to work for the party and not for the post, at one point fighting tears. (Narendra Modi Fights Back Tears in First Speech In Parliament)
On Wednesday, Mr Modi will resign as Gujarat chief minister.
