Ahmedabad: A grand welcome was given to Narendra Modi and his aide Amit Shah when they arrived at the Ahmedabad airport after receiving the President's invite to form the next government.

In his short speech at the airport, Mr Modi thanked party workers for the grand welcome and said that he has got a new opportunity to serve the country.

He also praised party general secretary Shah for giving more seats to the party in Uttar Pradesh than the Congress tally.

"Now, our responsibility is too big and we have to realise the dreams of common people. Gujarat will carry on its developmental journey, as the state has created an institutional framework conducive for development. We have to ensure that country progresses faster than what we achieved in Gujarat," Mr Modi said.

"The Gujarat experience will help me achieve the target," Mr Modi told party workers.

"I am full of confidence that India can never fail. If 125 crore people of this country pledge for development, we can compete with richer countries of the world," he said.

"This election has given so much. One such thing is an efficient worker like Amit Shah. Very few people can estimate the power of the real worker," Mr Modi said, praising Amit Shah.

"In 20 states and Union Territories, Congress was not able to open its account, while, in what the Congress could gather (seats) from 30 states, Amit delivered almost double that number from UP," Mr Modi said.

He also said that the people of Gujarat and party workers would have "first right" over him as he is a primary member of the party from Gujarat.

Modi was appointed Prime Minister by President Pranab Mukherjee today after he led the BJP and NDA to a landslide victory in the 2014 general elections.
