Sabir Ali's wife Yasmin (Centre) being whisked away by women police officers from outside Naqvi's house in Delhi
New Delhi:
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi's official residence in the capital's Pandara Park area had an unwelcome guest this afternoon. Yasmin, wife of Sabir Ali, squatted in front of the BJP vice-president's house seeking an apology for his remarks that led to her husband's unceremonious ouster from the party 24 hours after he was formally inducted. "I will sit here till I get justice. He (Naqvi) should prove the allegation or give an apology letter," Yasmin told reporters outside the BJP leader's residence. She was whisked away by women police officers soon after as she had refused to shift her protest venue.
Mr Ali, the Janata Dal (United)'s candidate from Sheohar in Bihar and an outgoing Rajya Sabha member, was embraced by the BJP on Friday. A few hours later, Mr Naqvi used the social networking site, Twitter, to post his reservations about his party's newest Muslim face. He alleged that Mr Ali had close links with Yasin Bhatkal, the alleged mastermind of terror group Indian Mujahideen, and wondered whether Dawood Ibrahim would be the party's next recruit.
Mr Ali's entry into the BJP was also opposed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or the RSS, the BJP's ideological mentor.
Mr Ali's membership was terminated by an embarrassed BJP the next day. Hours later, he asked the BJP vice-president to apologise for his remarks, or be ready to face a defamation suit.
A businessman-turned-politician, Mr Ali had been expelled from the Janata Dal (United) on Monday last week after he heaped praise on Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. He had earlier been denied a renomination to the Rajya Sabha by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, the de-facto head of JD(U).
