New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the Congress' campaign for the national election, may hold a roadshow on May 10 in Varanasi, the constituency from where the opposition BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi is contesting.

The Congress leader's Varanasi roadshow is being planned for the last day of campaigning in these elections, much as Mr Modi had chosen to campaign in Mr Gandhi's constituency Amethi in the closing hours of campaigning for that region on Monday. Varanasi will vote on May 12 in the ninth and last round of polling in this general elections.

The reports of a possible Rahul rally came in as fierce confrontation rages between the BJP and the Election Commission over the refusal of permission for three events for Mr Modi in Varanasi tomorrow.

The permissions for a rally at a large public park, a prayer on the banks of the Ganga, and a meeting with 150 citizens at a local hotel were refused by Pranjal Yadav, who, as the Returning Officer of the Varanasi constituency, is responsible for conducting the election.

On Monday, Mr Modi landed in Amethi to campaign for the BJP candidate, actor-politician Smriti Irani. Amethi has been a Gandhi bastion for decades, but this time around, the battle is seen as a real challenge to Rahul, who is asking for a third term as its representative in parliament.

Mr Gandhi will campaign in Varanasi for his party's candidate, Ajay Rai.
