Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh today said Sonia Gandhi did not make any sacrifice by relinquishing the post of Prime Minister in 2004 as Sanjay Baru's book had proved that she was the one actually running the government.
"By not accepting the Prime Minister's post in 2004, Soniaji made no sacrifice. From the book of former advisor of the Prime Minister, Mr Sanjay Baru, 'The Accidental Prime Minister', it has been proven that the central government was being run from 10 Janpath (Mrs Gandhi's residence)," Mr Rajnath Singh said at an election rally at Aurangabad on Friday.
Attacking the Congress for dubbing his party non-secular, Mr Rajnath Singh said, "BJP is blamed for dividing the society. Soniaji does not know the history of the country. India's partition was not done by BJP, but by the Congress," he said.
Dismissing reports of there being differences in the party over Mr Narendra Modi's nomination as the PM candidate, Mr Singh said the decision was taken after consulting "all senior leaders."
"It is a party with an ideology in which Indian culture is reflected. Some people allege that there is a struggle within the BJP for the Prime Minister's post, but there is nothing of that sort. The decision to make Mr Modi the prime ministerial candidate was taken after taking all senior leaders into confidence," he said.
Mr Singh also said that the Congress wanted to take the support of the people by creating fear (about the BJP).
He said during the tenure of the Congress government in the last 10 years, inflation had sky rocketed. "If there was any government that controlled price rise, it was the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government," he said.
He also accused the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) of having a tacit understanding with the Congress.
