Iddinthakarai, Tamil Nadu: Activist SP Udayakumar, who spearheaded a people's movement against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, joined the Aam Aadmi Party today.
Announcing his decision at Idinthakarai village in Tirunelvelli district, around 650 km from Chennai and ground zero of the protest against the nuclear plant, Mr Udayakumar said, "AAP has agreed to conditions put by our community... We will persist against all destructive projects across India."
The activist said he finds AAP a "credible alternative" to the Congress and the BJP. He is likely to be fielded from Kanyakumari seat though AAP, which makes its debut in Lok Sabha polls this year, has not made a formal announcement yet.
Mr Udayakumar was the convenor of the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy or PMANE which spearheaded the anti-Kudankulam campaign. The organisation raised questions like land acquisition and disposal of nuclear waste, besides other issues linked to the plant commissioned last year.
"AAP believes the people affected by such projects should have the final say," Mr Udayakumar said.
