Trinamool candidate Satabdi Roy's 'development for votes' speech under Election Commission scanner

Satabdi Roy is contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a trinamool Congress ticket.

Kolkata: The Election Commission (EC) today issued a showcause notice to Trinamool Congress candidate (TMC) Satabdi Roy for warning voters that if they did not vote for her, development work in their villages would be done later.

The 44-year-old actor-turned-politician made the alleged speech in Dobandh village in the Birbhum constituency on Sunday.

"Places where there are fewer votes for us, there will be less development. We will do development in those places where people support us. Where there are more people for us, their villages will have more development," she had said in her speech.

The Election Commission has sought a report from the district magistrate of Birbhum.

"We sought the DM's report suo motu after going through her statement in different TV channels. According to the video footage, she was seen assuring people that areas supporting her party will get priority on development works. We have received the DM's report today," an Officer on Special Duty to the Election Commission said.

Ms Roy has reportedly admitted her mistake and apologised to the Election Commission for the same.
