As India awaits the Lok Sabha election results for 2024, counting of votes is currently underway. The seven-phase election, which spanned from April 19 to June 1, witnessed a fierce contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition bloc, INDIA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a historic third term, while the INDIA bloc aims to secure a majority in the Lok Sabha by consolidating the seats won by its member parties.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had won 303 seats, a staggering 55 per cent of the 542 member assembly. But their vote share stood at 37 per cent, and the party would hope to better that along with their tally this time around. The party or coalition with 272 or more seats then chooses a prime minister to lead the government.

Congress had won 52 seats despite a vote share of nearly 20 per cent.

The nation witnessed democracy in action as voters nationwide participated in a largely peaceful election. However, isolated incidents of violence were reported at several polling stations in a few states.

A significant highlight of this election was the introduction of the optional home voting facility. For the first time in India's general election history, citizens aged 85 and above, or those with a 40 percent benchmarked disability, were given the option to vote from home via postal ballot. This marked a paradigm shift in the electoral process, aiming to make voting more accessible and inclusive.

According to the Election Commission, phase 1 saw a voter turnout of 66.14 percent across 102 parliamentary constituencies, while phase 2 recorded 66.71 percent for 88 seats. In phase 3, the voter turnout was 65.68 percent for 93 seats, and phase 4 witnessed a higher turnout of 69.16 percent for 96 parliamentary constituencies. Phase 5 saw a turnout of 62.2 percent for 49 seats, and phase 6 recorded 63.37 percent for 58 seats.

As live election votes share updates continue to pour in, both the NDA and the INDIA bloc are closely watching the tally, hopeful for favorable outcomes. The final results, which will determine the next government, are keenly awaited by political analysts, party supporters, and the general public alike.
