The main political contenders in Maharashtra were the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The UPA comprised the Indian National Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, while the NDA included the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena.
In 2014, BJP won 23 seats in the state while its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena, got 18. The Congress was the worst affected with its tally going down from 17 (in 2009) to just two seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP won four seats in the 2014 elections.
