London:
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is aiming to capture audiences in Britain by releasing two of his films Peepli Live and Delhi Belly.
Anusha Rizvi directed Peepli Live, produced by Aamir, is a tragedy with dark comic undertones. It is the first Indian film to compete in the Sundance Film Festival and will be targeted at Britain's art house audiences this month.
"Peepli Live has the potential to engage an audience outside our usual audience in the UK. We're trying to reach out," Khan told the Times.
The film is about farmers who are about to lose their land when they discover that if one commits suicide their family will qualify for a 100,000 rupee government handout - enough to save their farms.
Aamir is next planning to release Delhi Belly, a comic caper entirely in English.
The actor is most familiar in Britain for playing the lead in Lagaan, the story of a peasant revolt against land taxes under the British Raj. The film, which Khan also produced, was nominated for an Oscar in 2001.
His latest hit was '3 Idiots' in which the 45-year-old actor played a teenage college student. Both films were in league with Aamir's description of mainstream Bollywood, "Over the top, vibrant, with huge emotions, melodramatic, lot of things thrown into one, romance, revenge, tragedy, music and comedy."
