New Delhi: India's Oscar hope, Visarani, has not made it to the shortlist of nine in the Best Foreign Language Film category and its producer, Tamil star Dhanush, posted a tweet saying his team was 'happy to have represented' the country. Visaranai, one of 85 films submitted for Oscar consideration from around the world, is a Tamil crime drama that released last February. The film is directed by Vetrimaaran and stars Dinesh Ravi. It won three prizes at the National Awards this year - Best Tamil Feature Film, Best Supporting Actor and Best Editing. In his tweet on Friday, Dhanush thanked everyone who wished the film well.
Members of the Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences pare the list of 85 down, after which the Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee expands their six choices to nine, forming the shortlist. The final cut of five are announced with the rest of the Oscar nominations, expected on January 24.
The shortlist of nine films chosen include Toni Erdmann from Germany, a comic depiction of a troubled father-daughter relationship. The film, which has already won several European film awards, has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the foreign film category.

Also on the shortlist are Cannes Grand Prix winner It's Only the End of the World from Canada, Tanna from Australia, Land Of Mine from Denmark, The King's Choice from Norway, Paradise from Russia, A Man Called Ove from Sweden and My Life As A Zucchini from Switzerland.
