New Delhi: Director Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet opened last Friday to poor reviews, poorer box office collections and reports that the filmmaker was moving to Paris. On Facebook, however, Mr Kashyap wrote that he was "not done" making films at home in India and was only taking 'a little detour."
"Films is what I breathe, what I live for, does not matter where I go and where I stay, I will only make films, and no I am not done with making films in and about my country, rest is just a little detour," he wrote in the post. In an interview with Mr Kashyap, India Today reported that the director is moving to a studio apartment in Paris because "France is the most cinema friendly country in the world." Mr Kashyap, who co-runs production house Phantom Films, will "retain business interests here."
On Facebook, he also stood by Bombay Velvet. "This is the film I wanted to make and I am glad I got to make it. I am very happy that all those who have been part of this journey firmly stand with it. No, I am not depressed or hiding, this has taught us a lot and is my absolute personal favourite, there have been no regrets whatsoever. Bombay Velvet has been worth all the heart ache and pain and a memory to cherish for life. The Applause or Brickbats do not matter, what matters is who is standing in the arena. I WILL BE BACK," he added.(Also Read: )
Mr Kashyap, director of the acclaimed Dev D and Gangs of Wasseypur, also thanked several cast and crew members in the lengthy post: "Thank you for your pride and love in what we did together, the process was beautiful and we have all come back richer from it. I think I am very rich today for having so many friends and people in my life and their faith."
Bombay Velvet, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar, is set in the underbelly of Sixties era Mumbai. The film has left both critics and the box office cold, making just over Rs 16 crores in three days. On Twitter, trade analyst Taran Adarsh described the film's performance as a 'debacle.' This is also the second flop in a row for actor Ranbir Kapoor, after 2013's Besharam, directed by Anurag Kashyap's brother Abhinav. Ranbir had a supporting role in this year's Roy, also a flop.(Also Read: Bombay Velvet Gets no Box Office Love Over the Weekend)
