New Delhi: Proud granddad Amitabh Bachchan, who has been busy receiving guests at the Seven Hills Hospital, took time out to thank the media for showing restraint after his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave birth to a baby girl today.

"As I travel back from the hospital I need to thank the media for keeping their word of not intruding our privacy. Deeply obliged !," tweeted Big B a few minutes ago.

Following speculative reports about the baby's birth, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had asked the electronic media to respect the privacy of the Bachchan family.

First time father, Abhishek, 35, broke the news on Twitter, saying "IT'S A GIRL!!!!!! :)))))". Abhishek later tweeted, "Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Both Aishwarya and the baby are doing great and taking some much needed rest."A jubilant father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan joined in: "I AM DADA to the cutest baby girl!! A dada ji ... Ecstatic !!!!"

His father, Amitabh Bachchan who broke the news of Aishwarya's pregnancy in June on Twitter.

Several celebrities visited the hospital to greet the new born and the mother. Actress Sonali Bendre with husband Goldie Behl, producer Bunty Walia, director Apoorva Lakhia and Bachchan family friend and politician Amar Singh visited the hospital today.

Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai got married on April 20, 2007. The much publicised wedding took place at Prateeksha, theBachchan residence in suburban Juhu. Amitabh and Jaya are also grandparents to daughter Shweta Nanda's two kids -- daughter Navya Naveli and son Agastya.

Now, Mr Bachchan is expected to address a press conference in Mumbai either Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

"Have been up for more than 24 hours .. Need rest," the Big B tweeted.
