A still from Gabbar Is Back
The box office is proving bountiful for Akshay Kumar's Gabbar Is Back which released last Friday. Weekend collections indicate that Bollywood's period of drought may have finally ended with the film already having made in three days more than what movies like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! earned in three weeks.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted:
Gabbar Is Back is also the highest opener of 2015, the first quarter of which ended with the box office honours going to Hollywood films Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Akshay Kumar stars as a vigilante named Gabbar in the Krish-directed film. Shruti Haasan plays the female lead with Kareena Kapoor making a special appearance.
Avengers, in its second week in India, is still going full steam ahead.
Bollywood has a series of potentially big Fridays coming up. Piku, starring Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, opens this Friday followed by Bombay Velvet with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, Kangana Ranaut's Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Dil Dhadakne Do starring an ensemble cast that includes Priyanka Chopra, Anushka and Ranveer Singh.
