New Delhi:
The day of reckoning for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is here.
She will make her first Cannes appearance of 2012 this evening and can expect intense scrutiny from Ash-watchers at home in India.
Less than a month ago this picture of Aishwarya emerging from a party at the Ambanis sparked huge debate about her failure to lose her post pregnancy weight.
Ash, who gave birth to daughter Aaradhya on November 16, 2011, was roundly criticised by many for not having shed the extra pounds.
She was also accused of having put on weight after the birth, rather than having lost any. Critics said she was heavier by a few kilos than she was in this picture tweeted by Oprah Winfrey, taken two months before the Ambani party.
Others were quick to jump to Ash's defence, calling it unfair to expect a new mother to instantly drop all the baby weight.
Designer Sabysachi said "Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has just delivered a baby and like any other woman she would definitely take time to put off that weight. She's a super celebrity and I think she is doing a commendable job by showing her real side to the media. Earlier, she was criticised for being unreal and plastic." The debate about Ash's weight also led to speculation about what Ash would wear to Cannes and whether she would attend at all. She will, in fact, be making two red carpet appearances this year, her eleventh at Cannes. She will also attend a fundraiser for AIDS research.
Her fashion secret for this year is also out and confirms previous speculation that she would forgo Armani and Elie Saab, who served her so well last year, in favour of traditional Indian ensembles.
We now know that Ash will be dressed by Jaya Bachchan's go to designers, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Her wardrobe includes a cream chikankari sari and an anarkali-style kurta. (Photos: Why we're still obsessed with Ash's weight
For our part, we have no doubt that Ash will cut a fine figure on the Croisette.
