Los Angeles:
Angelina Jolie is set to star in forthcoming film Gertrude Bell, a biopic of a pioneering figure in the Middle East in the early 20th Century.
The project is being developed by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions and the filmmaker is planning to direct it as well.
Jeffrey Caine is penning the screenplay, which is being tailored specifically for Jolie, said The Hollywood Reporter.
Bell worked for British intelligence during the first world war and was described as a "key asset" in helping dismantle the Ottoman Empire and founding Iraq, winning the admiration of many Arabic people.
She had a passion for archaeology and languages and wrote about her adventures in the region.
Jolie, 36, whose directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey hits theaters next month, has a number of acting projects in development.
She's attached to play Kay Scarpetta in an adaptation of the popular Patricia Cornwell novels, as well as Disney's Maleficent. A sequel to her hit action film Salt also is being written. She last starred in The Tourist opposite Johnny Depp.
