It's traditional for Oscar hosts to ruffle a few starry feathers with a jibe or two disguised as fun during the show. But first time host Anne Hathaway has managed to offend no less than Hollywood's power couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, even before nominations have been announced.
The 28-year-old actress, who will be presenting the 83rd Academy Awards with co-host James Franco, got under Katie's skin by making fun of her in a skit on US comedy show Saturday Night Live, in November.
The Devil Wears Prada star was guest-presenting the comedy show when she mimicked the 32-year-old actress in a sketch, speaking in breathy tones and constantly tucking her hair behind her ear.
But Mr and Mrs Cruise weren't laughing and may end up giving the biggest award show in Hollywood a miss entirely. They don't want an awkward red carpet confrontation with Anne during Oscar night, reported Daily Mail online.
"Tom and Katie don't want to have to cross paths with Anne. They used to be friends and took Anne to a Tina Turner concert in 2008 when Anne split up from her boyfriend Raffaello Follieri," said a source close to the couple.
"Katie feels they were really supportive at a difficult time so she feels let down that Anne took to national TV to make fun of her. Anne didn't even warn her it was going to be on TV. The whole thing has left a sour taste with Tom," added the source.
