Asha Bhonsle Criticises Mumbai Police

Nashik: Legendary singer Asha Bhonsle criticised the Mumbai police today for their bad behavior.

While speaking at a ceremony in Nashik, the veteran singer said the police should be trained to behave better with the public.

She said, "Mumbai police behaves badly with the common people. Even if it is a small matter, they start shouting as though a murder has been committed. I do not know why they do this. Perhaps they need to be trained how to behave better with the public."

Asha Bhosle was honoured with D lit degree by the city-based Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) in recognition to her contribution in the field of entertainment.

Maharashtra Governor K Shankarnarayanan presented a citation and the honorary degree to the 77-year-old versatile playback singer at the YCMOU's 17th convocation ceremony here.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhosle lauded the YCMOU for designing a variety of distance learning courses for students, ranging from Mumbai's "dabbewalas" to policemen to barbers.

She said married women can also benefit from the open university's courses. "Women, after marriage, generally stay at home. Such women can enrol for distance education being provided by the university."

Asha Bhosle started her career in 1943 and has done playback singing for over 1,000 Hindi movies. In her career spanning six decades, she has sung more than 12,000 songs in different languages.

She has received a number of honours, including Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, Lata Mangeshkar Award and Lifetime Achievement Award.
