New Delhi:
Sanjay Dutt's much anticipated comeback movie Bhoomi finally hit theatres on Friday and scored almost Rs 5 crore at the box office. The movie opened to middling reviews and raked in a sum of Rs 2.25 crore on its first day. Bhoomi upped its box office scorecard to Rs 4.72 crore in total with Saturday's collection figures being Rs 2.47 crore, reported trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Bhoomi, which went on floors and wrapped shooting this year itself, was long awaited by fans of the Munna Bhai actor because it marks Mr Dutt's first film after he completed his five-year jail term in relation to the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
Bhoomi, a revenge drama, casts the 58-year-old actor as a father, who avenges the injustice his daughter Bhoomi (played by Aditi Rao Hydari) was subjected to. In a recent interview with PTI, Mr Dutt admitted that in his projects, he's more comfortable playing roles matching his age in real life. Bhoomi also casts Sidhant Gupta and Sharad Kelkar in key roles.
In his review for NDTV, Raja Sen sums up the flavour of Sanjay Dutt's character, saying: "It probably makes sense for Sanjay Dutt to play a slurring drunkard in Bhoomi. It makes it okay for the returning hero to look like he has forgotten his lines. More grizzled than ever, Dutt lurches through Bhoomi speaking all his dialogues - from the prayers in an aarti to a declaration of bloody vengeance - in the same dopey monotone."
Directed by Omung Kumar, Bhoomi released along with Rajkummar Rao's Newton, which is India's official entry to the Oscars and Shraddha Kapoor's Haseena Parkar.
