Big bang at the box office today: Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Son Of Sardaar

Big bang at the box office today: Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Son Of Sardaar
Clash of the titans: Son Of Sardaar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan release today
New Delhi: Diwali is here and so is the much-discussed clash of titans at the box office. Bollywood heavyweights Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn face-off today with romance-drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan and ribtickler Son Of Sardaar respectively.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan's emotional quotient also includes the fact that it is director Yash Chopra's last film. Mr Chopra died of dengue-related complications on October 21, three weeks before his swan song released, making this the last chance for cine-goers to watch a full blown 'Yash Chopra romance.' The film stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the female leads. SRK, who has starred in Mr Chopra's last four films, plays an army officer named Samar. The film has music by A R Rahman and lyrics by Gulzar.

Son Of Sardaar stars Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt in addition to Ajay Devgn. Directed by Ashwni Dhir, the film is set in rural Punjab. The film is a remake of Telugu hit, Maryada Ramanna. The music of the film is composed by Himesh Reshammiya. Ajay Devgn had to make a few changes in the film after the release of its first trailer, after the Punjabi Cultural Heritage Board raised objections over certain scenes and dialogues.

The box-office collision was preceded by an off-screen storm of controversy that divided Bollywood with Ajay Devgn Films, producer of Son Of Sardaar, accusing Yash Raj Films, producer of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, of using it's influence to create a monopoly and keep SOS out of theatres. Ajay Devgn filed a petition with the Competition Commission asking that Jab Tak Hai Jaan's release be stayed. The petition was rejected, as was the appeal. However, the Appellate tribunal did send a notice to Yash Raj Films on the basis of Ajay's complaint.

Yash Raj Films says they booked theatres for Jab Tak Hai Jaan before the August 15 release of their previous film, Ek Tha Tiger starring Salman Khan, and that many theatres showing that film chose not to show this one.

Controversy notwithstanding, this Diwali has all the makings of a firecracker at the box-office.
