Mumbai: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, whose forthcoming project, Gangs of Wasseypur has been selected for screening at the 65th Cannes film festival, says the event is like the Mecca for every filmmaker.
"People usually think if a film goes to Cannes it's an art film...but we have made a commercial film. It has taken lot of years for me to reach here. This year, so many films from here have gone to Cannes. For me a film being selected for the Cannes festival is a tremendous thing. For example, if Udaan would not have gone to Cannes then I think it would not have released in India....so whatever it is, it in a way benefits," Anurag Kashyap told reporters here, at a promotional event of the film.
"It is important for me to know where and what my target audience is and what they like to see as everyone used to tell me don't make this film or that...today I realised I was not wrong," he said.
Gangs of Wasseypur, directed by Anurag Kashyap is set in a small town in Jharkand. It tells tales of revenge.
"For the first time I have made a commercial film...It is a massy film. It is my most expensive film till date. The combined budget is much less...It is just 10 per cent of the biggest film made in India. My big budget is still very less compared to other people, Mr Kashyap said. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Reema Sen and others.
