Chandan Roy Sanyal says no to Bengali potboilers
Kolkata:   Kolkata Kaminey actor Chandan Roy Sanyal is no game for Bengali potboilers, though he has been flooded with offers after his debut in the acclaimed Bengali filmMahanagar@Kolkata.

Chandan in town to attend the special screening of Aparajita Tumi, his second Bengali movie which is centred around NRIs in San Fransico, said he felt cheesed off by those typical 'masala' roles and hoped he was not sounding arrogant.

"I must say I can't simply do the kind of films where I have to sway my hips, do 'dhisum dhusum' type of acts to bash up villains and frolick with the female lead," Chandan said.

He said he was interested only in 'meaningful' roles where he can put to use his acting experience in theatre.

Chandan credits Vishal Bharadwaj for shaping him for his much-acclaimed role of 'Mikhail' in Kaminey.

"Just the other day, a woman came up to me and asked, 'Are you not the one who acted in Kaminey? Vishal and I still enjoy the 'guru-shishya' relationship. He gave me such a role in Kaminey. And he trusted me."

Acknowledged for his fluent performance in the role of a dispassionate US-based venture capitalist in Aparajita Tumi, Chandan said he hoped to work in another Vishal productions someday.

The actor got his first break in Rang De Basanti, a big hit, in the company of an enviable star cast including Aamir Khan.

Turning to Aparajita Tumi by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Chandan said, "I went for the role because I was struck by the lyricism of the script and once you see the film you know how he has fleshed out the characters, and blended them with the location of his film - San Fransisco.

"After the director's brief, I could visualise the character of a successful, career-driven venture capitalist, self-possessed and yet detached non-resident Bengali character, to show different shades of his relationship with his wife," he said.

The actor also praised Kamalinee Mukherjee, who essayed the wife's role in the film, for making the scenes appear so real.

Coming back to Hindi films, Chandan said, "I am now waiting for audience response to my role in Love You to Death (Hindi). For me the script is what matters, and not an established or a debutant director."
