It's raining remakes in Bollywood. The latest classic film to be given an update is Hrishikesh Mukerjee's 1975 comedy of errors Chupke Chupke, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore and Jaya Bachchan. OMG! Oh My God director Umesh Shukla will reportedly helm the new version.
In the original film, Dharmendra plays a professor of botany playing a prank on his new wife's relatives by posing as a driver. Sharmila Tagore plays his wife, Amitabh Bachchan plays a professor of English and Dharmendra's friend made an unwilling accomplice in the prank, and Jaya Bachchan plays Dharmendra's sister-in-law who Amitabh falls in love with.
Chupke Chupke was itself a remake of hit Bengali comedy Chhadmabeshi, starring Uttam Kumar and Madhabi Mukherjee.
The list of remakes of Bollywood classics include Amitabh Bachchan's 1973 film Zanjeer, featuring Priyanka Chopra and Ram Charan Teja, which is currently being challenged in court by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar who wrote the original film. Farooque Shaikh-Deepti Naval 1981 comedy Chashme Buddoor was remade by David Dhawan as Chashme Baddoor, starring Ali Zafar, Siddharth and Taapsee Pannu. Sajid Khan remade 1983's Himmatwala, starring Jeetendra and Sridevi, with Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah.
Aashiqui 2, a retelling of Mahesh Bhatt's hit film Aashiqui starring Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal, has just released with Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles.
Amitabh Bachchan's Don (1978) was remade in 2006 with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, and a sequel was made in 2011. Other well-known remakes include Parineeta (2005) starring Vidya Balan, a remake of Bimal Roy's 1953 film starring Meena Kumari, and 2012's Agneepath starring Hrithik Roshan in the role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, originally played by Amitabh Bachchan.
