Dabangg, the much-hyped Salman Khan starrer action flick looks set to become this year's biggest blockbuster, opening to packed houses, cashing in onthe Eid weekend.
The movie starring Salman as a corrupt cop Chulbul 'Robinhood' Pandey, reportedly opened to 97 per cent occupancy across single screens in India.
The film, which also marks the debut of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi, opened in 1300 screens across India, including 250 prints in Delhi-NCR itself.
Critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, "Chulbul Pandey aka Robinhood Pandey taps Salman's star power like no film has and the result is sheer magic. In fact, Dabangg stands on three pillars - Salman's star power, smashing stunts and super music."
Girish Wankhede, spokesman for multiplex chain Cinemax said the film has received overwhelming response at all its theatres. "The opening has been excellent and our patrons have been coming out of the theatres happy," he said.
Another trade analyst Amod Mehra described the movie as "entertaining", adding that it has got an outstanding opening throughout the country. "The opening is as good as 3 Idiots. Dabangg has the benefit of the festive weekend. Let's see how it picks up," he said.
The film, dubbed a 'masala entertainer' in reviews, had created a hype, thanks to Salman's new moustached look and the hit item number Munni Badnaam.
Dabangg which also stars Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, was made with a budget of Rs 18 crores and was reportedly sold to distributors for Rs 40 crores.
"Dabangg opens to packed houses all over. What a feeling !!! Want to thank Salman, Sonakshi, abhinav, sonu and the entire team of Dabangg !!" tweeted actor Arbaaz Khan, who has ventured into production with this movie.
The film revolves around Chulbul Pandey as he deals with conniving politicians, familial misunderstanding and also romances the village belle played by Sonakshi. It has been directed by Abhinav Kashyap, brother of director Anurag Kashyap.
Dabangg has also attracted praise from B-town insiders.
"Hey twpl, Dabangg is an out and out entertainer. SALMAN ROCKS !!! (sic)," tweeted director Madhur Bhandarkar.
Ahead of the film's release, megastar Amitabh Bachchan wished Salman luck on Twitter, writing, ""Salman ! All good wishes for Dabangg - promos and song Munni .. fantastic!!"
