Kochi: Controversial film DAM 999, which has been banned in Tamil Nadu, was released nationwide in 550 cinema houses today.
The movie was released in UAE yesterday and will hit screens in Singapore tomorrow.
In Kerala, the film is being shown in 50 theatres.
The Tamil Nadu government had banned the movie yesterday amid mounting political pressure, saying its title refers to the Mullaperiyar dam row between the state and Kerala.
The government said that its release could disturb cordial ties between the two states and create law and orderproblem.
Debutant director Sohan Roy, who plans to move the Supreme Court against the ban had termed it as "totallyunfortunate."
He said the film is based on real life incidents, bringing to life memories of the 1975 Banqiao dam disaster inChina, which killed an estimated 2.5 lakh people.
"Shot in a single start-to-end schedule DAM 999 has 16 national and international award-winning cast and crew," he said.
DAM 999 is about a corrupt mayor who builds a new dam for political gains, a mariner desperate to save his sister from evil, two lovers, a woman on a mission to win her family back, a little boy battling a deadly disease, a devoted wife wanting to be with her husband even in death and an astrologer who has foreseen their fate -- nine lives entwined by the impending disaster.
The multi starer, released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam along with English, has been produced by UAE based BizTV Networks.
The ban came even as Tamil Nadu and Kerala are locked in a war of words over the 116-year-old dam, which Kerala wants brought down to build a new one while Tamil Nadu opposes it.
The dam in Idukki district of Kerala is under Tamil Nadu's control and meets irrigation needs of farmers inSouthern districts.
