Day Drinker revolves around the story of a cruise ship bartender who has a chance encounter with a mysterious day drinker. Later, they get caught in a criminal plot and find themselves connected in unexpected ways. Backed by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the action thriller is produced under the banner of Lionsgate. Adam Kolbrenner and Zach Dean act as additional producers. While Adam is credited with producing films like The Tomorrow War and Free Guy, Zach wrote the screenplay for Fast X and The Tomorrow War

Adam Fogelson, the chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, promised “wildly outrageous twists and turns” in Day Drinker. He said, “Day Drinker combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world, and there is no better filmmaker than Marc or two more perfectly cast actors than Johnny and Penélope to bring that world to life,” in a statement, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

After being dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise owing to his legal battles, Johnny Depp secured a major role as a lead in the Maïwenn-directed romance drama Jeanne du Barry. The movie was based on the life of French courtesan Jeanne Bécu. While Maïwenn essayed the titular character, Johnny Depp slipped into the shoes of Louis XV.

Apart from Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp also took the director's chair for the film Modi — Three Days on the Wings of Madness. Headlined by Riccardo Scamarcio as famed Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, the project premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival this year.
