London: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 just broke the box office record for first day sales in North America, say studio spokesmen.

Warner Bros, who have produced the eight-part series, have released a statement saying that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, made $92.1m in North America alone on Friday.

This honour previously belonged to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which collected $72.7m (£45m) on opening day.

The seventh book in the series was split into two parts to accommodate the various elements to the highly detailed story. While all the previous seven movies were released in 2D, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released in 3D in select theatres, thereby explaining the fluffier returns.

The Harry Potter film series is a nearly $10 billion franchise, including sales from merchandising, ad-sales, etc., making it the most successful film franchise of all time.
